The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, on February 2, is also called Candlemas Day.
According to Luke’s account of the gospel,Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah in the Temple and declared him “a light for the revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel”( Luke 2:32)
This sparked the tradition of blessing enough candles to last an entire year and to candle processions in churches and in the streets.
How do we let Simeon’s words and Anna’s actions become ours today? When we find ways to follow the example of Simeon and Anna, even as our age advances, we embrace our call to proclamation and mission. Then, in the end, we, like Simeon, may say to God, “you may let your servant go in peace.”
For peace, is seeing, knowing, and witnessing to the Messiah, the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
