Original Sin and its effects

Dear parishioners and friends,
In the Book of Genesis, we read of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, their rejection of God’s love, and his beautiful plan for their lives. This event is known as the Fall and their alienation from God called is Original Sin. This has been passed down to each of us but is thankfully removed by Baptism. The effects of original sin are clear. Adam and Eve hide from God, which is rather silly considering what we know of God being all knowing. They ‘realise’ that they are naked and so cover themselves in fig leaves. Again, this is rather silly because when fig leaves come into contact with skin it induces itchiness and a burning sensation. Furthermore, they immediately begin to blame each other. How much more human can you get than that? Tragically, this is not how it was meant to be. Our original holiness in the garden of Eden was squandered for the desire of humans to try and be God, to control everything, and be the centre of the universe.

We see the effects of original sin even today. We still try to run and hide from God, rejecting his offer of joy, happiness, and peace. Instead, we busy ourselves with the pursuit of power, pleasure, money, and worldly goods. We are often ashamed of and harm our beautiful God-given bodies. They are not perfect, but they are fundamentally good because they were lovingly created by God. Lastly, we fight, argue, and compete with one another. Is that not the most basic explanation for all our wars, conflicts, and violence in the world?
Fr Francis

Day for Life
'The Lord is my shepherd - Compassion and Hope at the end of life'

On Sunday 16 June 2024 we celebrate the Day for Life. This year we focus on the theme of compassion and hope at the end of life as well as the reasons why the Church opposes the proposal to introduce assisted suicide or euthanasia. The day provides an opportunity for catechesis on the the precious gift of life which opens out into the hope of eternal life at our earthly death. The Bishops' Conference has a dedicated section of their website on this topic, which can be found here: https://www.cbcew.org.uk/day-for-life/

OLOV LATEST NEWS

GIFT AID DONATIONS:

Dear Parishioners:

We have worked with our colleagues in the Parish Support Team towards procedures for processing the Gift Aid from contactless donations through the Dona provider.

When signing a Gift Aid declaration on the device, you will also be asked if you would like your previous contactless donations to be Gift Aided.

Further, as entering a Gift Aid declaration on the device can take a couple of minutes, we want to help reduce the amount of time you may spend on the device, and reduce the queue for it. Leaflets have been created and placed at the back of the church and on the notice board. These contain a QR code that will enable you to use your smartphone to make your Gift Aid declaration. You can also access the Dona portal and leave your donation by simply scanning the underneath QR code:

You can also donate securely by debit or credit card by clicking on the button created at the section end.
