A Light For My Path
The Sunday of the Word of God
The 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time is the Sunday of the Word of God - a day, instituted by Pope Francis on the Feast of Saint Jerome in 2019, devoted to the celebration and study of Sacred Scripture. The Holy Father writes:

“Devoting a specific Sunday of the liturgical year to the word of God can enable the Church to experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world.”

“Your word is a lamp for my steps and a light for my path” - says the psalm (Ps 118: 105). In these challenging times, the Church encourages us to find in the Bible the light we need for each day. Reading Scripture isn’t always easy; some parts are hard to understand, and it doesn’t always give us the answers to our problems. However, it is a privileged and powerful means through which God can speak to us and light up our path. In this Jubilee Year of 2025 - whose theme is Hope - why not make a resolution to read a few verses of the Bible every day? Even just starting with the Gospel of the Mass for each Sunday (and weekday) can bring us many blessings, and reminds us that we’re in communion with believers throughout the world, not to mention all the saints in heaven! “I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace.” (Ps 84:8). May our efforts to keep in touch with God’s word help us to grow in hope, and to become a light for others in their need.

We have to talk about... Dogs
After much reflection and consultation, I’ve decided that from next Monday 27th January, dogs and other animals (except guide dogs) will no longer be permitted to enter Our Lady of Victories’ Church.

This decision may upset some parishioners. However, it is clear that their presence disturbs other worshippers, distracting them both from Mass and private prayer.

Pets are of course most welcome to follow all services from home via the webcam.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Fr Nigel

World Leprosy Day - Sunday 26th January
World Leprosy Day is observed on the last Sunday of January every year to raise the awareness of leprosy. It’s a time to recognise everyone worldwide who is affected by the disease, those who are supporting them and our goal for a leprosy-free world.

St Francis Leprosy Guild is the UK’s Catholic leprosy charity. They are grateful to anyone who supports their goal of a leprosy-free world. For more information or to donate, visit: www.stfrancisleprosy.org

A Prayer:
Lord, we remember the many people around the world affected by leprosy.
May we follow the example of your son, Jesus, and St Francis of Assisi
and show them love and compassion.
We pray that they may be freed from the disease and its stigma.
We give thanks for those who have been cured.
We remember those who are permanently marked by the disease
and all who care for them. Amen.
Prayer of St Francis Leprosy Guild
