Statistics
Catholic Women's Association Offertory Procession
Each year the Diocese of Westminster asks us to submit a set of ‘pastoral statistics’ about the life of the parish. These include the average number of people who came to Mass over four Sundays in September and October (879), the number of baptisms (44), confirmations (40), first holy communions (52), marriages (8), and funerals (13).
But also, they inquire about how many people are active and involved in the parish, in parish groups and in teaching the faith as catechists (50). The statistics briefly look beyond the walls of the church to how many people are visited and brought holy communion when they are sick or housebound (14).
However, as ever with statistics it doesn’t tell you the full story. It doesn’t tell you about the individuals behind each of these numbers. It tells us nothing of the journey of faith of those adults who chose to become Catholics at Easter, the couples who felt called to marriage, the people have been lifted up by the prayer of the parish at every Mass, or the comfort given by the Lord through a member of the community.
It fails to tell the story of someone who previously felt unwelcome in the Church and has now found a home in our community. Or the people who have left, who don’t come to Mass anymore, who have lapsed from the faith. From a priest’s perspective the numbers don’t include how many phone calls, emails, prayers, conversations and blessing of bibles, statues, and rosaries.
As we come towards the close of this year, it’s good that we thank God for all the numbers – yes, but all the individual stories too. We praise God for the great work he is doing among us.
Fr Francis
