You are the Christ !
Many of us enjoy travelling less as we get older. So the thought of following Pope Francis on his recent tour of the Far East would be mind-boggling, even more so when we consider he will be 88 in a few weeks! His 11-day mission to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore was planned some years ago but postponed due to the Covid pandemic. This 20,000 mile round trip was the longest of his tenure as Bishop of Rome; in East Timor, nearly half the population attended the Papal Mass. May such celebrations bring renewal and hope to Catholics of these countries, and to all people of good will.

“Who do you say I am?” asks Jesus in the Gospel. Peter’s concise reply, “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:29), is the profession of faith upon which the Lord will found his Church, choosing Peter as the first Pope. We know that Peter doesn’t always get it right; his regular tendency to put his foot in it isn’t glossed over in the New Testament writings. It’s most consoling for us to know that the saints weren’t perfect straight away, inviting us to be patient with ourselves and with those around us! Inspired by St Peter’s unwavering faith in his Master’s mercy, may we too affirm with all our hearts: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. You have the message of eternal life!”
Fr Nigel
