St Vincent de Paul (SVP)
The aim of the Society is to provide a means whereby members can practice Christianity by loving their neighbours in the person of the needy. The SVP Conference in this parish visits the lonely in their own home or in residential homes, the sick similarly in hospital, those in prison, those struggling on low incomes perhaps with young children, with personal problems, debt, drugs, alcoholism, or any of the many situations making life difficult or evincing a need. The SVP Christmas Party for the elderly of the neighbourhood has become a fixture in the life of the parish. Our parish SVP Conference has been working here since about 1860, the Society having been started in the Sorbonne by French students in 1833. We are ecumenical, worldwide (in some 130 countries) and our parish Conference helps two similar Conferences in Brasov, Romania, and in Kerala, India. In the recent past our Conference has funded a Goat project and a Housing project in India, and student scholarships in India and the Sudan. In certain parts of the world Christian action has to be discrete. New members are needed, and welcomed. The support of the parish community is very much appreciated, and essential.
