As part of the Westminster Synodal Pathway we are invited to join Bishop Nicholas Hudson at a Listening Event on Wednesday 8th December, 7.00pm – 9.00pm, at Westminster Cathedral Hall, Ambrosden Avenue, London SW1P 1QJ. Pope Francis has invited the worldwide Church to a time of listening – of listening deeply to each other as we walk side by side, sharing our stories of faith. Here in our local Church, our Diocese, this is just what we are doing. This Listening Event is an opportunity to listen, to share, and to dream about the Church we are called to be. All are welcome, and places can be booked by emailing catadmin@rcdow.org.uk.

Operation Elf...
… is Pact’s campaign to support prisoners to give a Christmas gift to their child,
Parishes and schools are invited to get involved in the campaign

Operation Elf Supporter Information:

Thank you for being part of the Operation Elf Campaign 2021. We are grateful for your efforts to share a little joy and hope with prisoners and their children this Christmas.

Important Details:

Do we know you?
Make sure we at Pact know that you are doing Operation Elf this year. Email us parish.action@prisoneradvice.org.uk.
What do you need to do?
    While doing your Christmas shopping, buy an extra gift cards with a £10 value only please. Want to donate more? Buy multiples of £10 cards. E.g. To donate £30, buy three separate £10 gift cards
Want to donate less? Club together with friends to buy a £10 gift card.

    Send all the £10 gift cards to us at Pact
Then we’ll make sure that:
    A prisoner can give the gift card(s) to their child so they can go on a lovely shopping trip and enjoy buying something they want.

What kind of Gift card to buy?

Choose one that gives lots of options to a child. Some may want to buy chocolate, others popular toiletries, a book or toy, or they may like to put it towards a new jacket.
A good choice is a One4All gift card which you can buy at the Post Office or online- this can be used in lots of shops. Otherwise choose department store gift cards e.g. Boots, M&S.
Please buy actual gift cards and not e-cards or e-vouchers as these are too difficult to distribute.
How can supporters feel connected with the families they are helping?
Invite supporters to head to our website and write a message of support to families who have someone in prison at this tough time: Pledge your support for Operation Elf | Prison Advice and Care Trust
Where to send the gift cards?
Please make sure gift cards arrive with us by 30th November 2021 to allow our Christmas Elves to share them with mums and dads in prison, for their children.
Collect them up and send them to us here:

ADVENT TALKS 2021

P I L G R I M A G E

Join us for our Advent series of on-line talks, this year about Pilgrimage
Thursday, 2nd December 20 - Walking with Jesus in Jerusalem

An imaginative journey around the Holy City to some of the places that Jesus was familiar with - the Temple, the Garden of Gethsemane and Golgotha. Our virtual pilgrimage in the footsteps of Jesus will be vivid, challenging and inspirational.

Speaker -The Very Revd Canon Richard Sewell
Dean of St George’s College, Jerusalem

Richard is British and has previously served as a priest in the Diocese of Southwark.  He trained at St Augustine’s College and has a BA in Theology from University of Birmingham and an MA in Biblical Studies from Heythrop College.  He has volunteered in Tiberias, run an inter-faith project in East London and worked as a mission educator with churches in Pakistan and Bangladesh.  In addition to his role as Dean of the College, he is Residentiary Canon of St George’s Cathedral, Jerusalem and Honorary Canon of Southwark Cathedral in the UK.

Thursday, 9th December 2021  - The Footsteps of the Apostle Paul in Rome

An informative journey through early Rome and St Paul’s travels and travails in spreading the word of Jesus.

Speaker - Richard Bowen

Richard has lived in Rome for 30 years.  He has an MA in History from UCL.  Over the years he has led tours to many different sites in Rome and its environs and is particularly fond of Ostia Antica, Tivoli and the ancient Roman sites including Baths of Caracalla, Trajan’s Market and the Ara Pacis.  Additionally Richard has worked for Smart History and likes to get off the beaten path by leading tours to the areas of Trasterevere and the Park of the Aqueducts.  He also leads on the Unification of Italy, defence of the Roman Republic of 1849 and the rise of Italian Fascism.  He often acts as guide on our pilgrimages to Rome.  In this instance he will be taking us on the journey of St Paul in Rome.

Thursday, 16th December 2021   -   Pilgrimage

Why are so many people who describe themselves as ‘not religious’ going on pilgrimage nowadays?  Writer Peter Stanford draws on his latest book, Pilgrimage: Journeys of Meaning, to argue that even in our secular times pilgrimage remains more than straightforward tourism.

Speaker - Peter Stanford

Peter is an award-winning British writer, journalist and broadcaster best known for his biographies and books on the history, theology and cultural significance of religious ideas.  A former editor of the Catholic Herald, he writes for the Daily and Sunday Telegraph and The Tablet.  He has presented television and radio documentaries on BBC1, Channels 4 & 5 and is a regular panellist on BBC Radio’s The Moral Maze.  His biography of Lord Longford was the basis of Channel 4’s multi-award winning drama, Longford.

All talks will be live on-line via Zoom at 4pm.  They will also be recorded for you to watch in your own time.

Cost:       £40 for the series

DONATIONS

GIFT AID DONATIONS:

Dear Parishioners:

We have worked with our colleagues in the Parish Support Team towards procedures for processing the Gift Aid from contactless donations trough the Dona provider.

When signing a Gift Aid declaration on the device, you also will be asked if you would like your previous contactless donations to be Gift Aided as well.

Further, as entering a Gift Aid declaration on the device can take a couple of minutes, we want to help reduce the amount of time you may spend on the device, and reduce the queue for it. Leaflets have been created and placed at the back of the church and on the notice board. These contain a QR code that will enable you to use your smartphone to make your Gift Aid declaration.

You can also access the Dona portal and leave your donation by simply scanning the QR code that you can find in the Newsletter Section of the Parish Website.

VIRGIN MONEY GIVING

We’ve been notified by Virgin Money Giving (VMG) that it will be ending its services to all charities as of 30th November.

The organisation that owns VMG has made the decision that once sponsorship of the London Marathon ends this year, they will end all of their operations as a not-for-profit..

What does it mean for our parish?

Of course this does mean that beyond the 30th November 2021 we will not be able to offer the option for parishioners and visitors to donate via the  VMG page. Nonetheless, we  want to reassure you that we have already been working towards a new online payment system called Stripe, that will enable us to offer not just an alternative to VMG, but a more comprehensive and accessible way for parishioners and visitors to give to our Parish. Those who want to give using their smart phone apps, e.g. Apple Pay and Google Pay will be able to.

On the top of that, why not set up a standing order? Or deciding to use the Dona QR Code available in both parish website and parish newsletter to give. You will also find the QR Code at the back of the Church.

A Warm Welcome to Paul Hewitt, Our Candidate for the Permanent Diaconate!

23/10/2021

Let us give a warm welcome to Paul Hewitt, our candidate for the permanent diaconate who would introduce himself to the parish community during masses this weekend. Please take a moment to greet Paul and make him feel your support.

Good Evening. My name is Paul Hewitt. I have been a parishioner here at Our Lady of Victories since 2005. I am married to Maria, who many of you will know, and we have two grown-up children, no longer living at home.
We are both trained and qualified as professional social workers and met at work many years ago.

I have worked in Local Authority settings for almost 35 years, and I am currently the statutory Director for Children’s Services Harrow Council. I have overall responsibility in the Council for Children and Adult Services, Public Health, Schools and Education.
So, what is it to be a Deacon? To be a Deacon is to be a man of service. Service on the Altar, and most importantly service in the community. It is a particular charisma of the Deacon to be engaged in the things of this world in the community and in the world of work.

I am now in formation to be ordained as a deacon. That formation includes completing further studies at St Mary’s University over the next three years; and it also involves formation in the spiritual life both on an individual level, and with my wife, but also as part of the spiritual life of this Parish.

My wife and I ask for your support and your prayers in this period of formation. I hope to be of service to the Church more widely and to this parish in particular, and with your prayers, God’s will be done.
I look forward to seeing you around in the parish over the next few months, as I find my way in this life of service.

Please pray for me,
Paul Hewitt
